It’s a practical way to make your life easier and your lessons more meaningful for students.

Let’s first address the biggest hurdle: curriculum overload. Understandably, the idea of weaving health topics into ELA can feel like an extra burden. I see it as a strategic approach to teaching that makes learning more relevant and efficient.

I’ve seen teachers have great success asking students to investigate topics like disparities in healthcare access within their community or the impact of social media on mental health. This process requires them to gather information from various sources, evaluate credibility, and synthesize their findings—all key ELA research skills.

The final product doesn’t have to be a traditional report. Students could present their findings by creating a short video, a public service announcement, or an engaging slideshow. As they present their work, they practice organizing their ideas logically, using precise language, and engaging an audience, directly meeting core speaking and listening objectives.

Practical tips for a seamless integration

Of course, integrating any new content comes with challenges. It’s understandable to be concerned about variations in student literacy levels, especially when supporting English Language Learners during discussions about sensitive topics like puberty.

Fortunately, simple, research-backed ELA strategies are incredibly effective here. Using a “word wall” with key health and anatomy terms can provide crucial vocabulary support for all students. Providing sentence starters (“I agree with… because…,” “One question I have is…”) can scaffold conversations, giving every student the confidence to participate in discussions and articulate their thoughts in writing.

This approach is also directly supported by national frameworks. The skills in the National Health Education Standards inherently involve reading, writing, and speaking. By using health as the content for your ELA instruction, you create a seamless experience where students build critical life skills and core academic competencies at the same time. You’re not doing two things at once; you’re doing one thing, better.
